5 Common Misconceptions And Electric Cigarettes
When radio was first invented, rumors abounded that the waves could cause brain tumors
and a host of other problems, the same sorts of misconceptions existed when television first appeared. Therefore, it is not surprising that electric cigarettes, as a recent technological breakthrough, have already developed their own set of misinformed rumors.
Of course, regardless of what your mother told you, sitting too close to the television has never been proven to damage your vision, and electric cigarette myths are no different: a reactionary response to technology people do not yet understand.
Research and basic facts though are already debunking these myths, but those who have not done their research continue to believe and spread a few common misconceptions.
1. E-cigarette companies are intentionally marketing to kids
When traditional cigarette companies were accused of marketing to children, there may have been some truth to those accusations. Camel Joe was a cartoon character, after all. With electric cigarettes, though, the argument is just plain silly.
According to some, the existence of flavors is reason enough to say that children are the target market for these devices.
The fact that grown-ups do not like flavors is probably news to many, including those who enjoyed chocolate cake for dessert last night or stopped off for a pastry on the way to work this morning. Coffee creamer comes in a variety of flavors, as well, but no one is accusing creamer companies of marketing to children.
2. Electric cigarettes are illegal in the United States
E-cigarettes are not purchased in covert back-alley deals. They are sold openly and obviously on the Internet, at gas stations and truck stops. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration may want to regulate e-cigs, but since they are neither a drug nor a food item, the FDA is out of its jurisdiction.
3. E-cigarettes contain hidden, dangerous chemicals
This one has been put to rest by repeated studies, but still the rumors continue. Modern science is pretty good at figuring out the chemical composition of just about anything through analysis, and they have done so with e-cigs time and again.
4. Nicotine by itself is a toxic carcinogen
The cancer-causing agents in traditional cigarettes come from tar and chemicals used in the manufacturing process, not nicotine. Nicotine is addictive, and it is a stimulant, but the exact same things can be said about caffeine.
5. If you are going to switch to electric cigarettes, you might as well just keep smoking
The fact is, those studies mentioned earlier continue to prove that e-cigarettes have nothing on traditional cigarettes when it comes to carcinogens. The chemicals in e-cig vapor are not present at toxic levels. In addition, vapers are not inhaling smoke caused by combustion; they are inhaling water vapor.
It is human nature to suspect something that is new and not yet fully understood, particularly where technology is concerned, but in the large majority of cases those fears are eventually proven to be unfounded.
It happened with radio and television in the past, and now it is happening with electric cigarettes. Just like with other technologies, though, there is a good chance that e-cigarettes will fall off the radar and into regular use as soon as the next new, scary invention comes along.
