5 Defining Characteristics of Pet Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are fascinating and unique pets whose traits make them very different from other pet rodents. Let's look at their various characteristics to see why they are such loveable, interesting creatures.

Sight, Hearing, Smell

Many small creatures have very good eyesight, which has evolved as a way to identify and escape from predators. Cavies on the other hand have quite poor eyesight, and can only really make out rough shapes and colours.

Their other senses are much more developed, and they can use their ears and noses to detect things that people would completely miss. This becomes all too apparent when you start preparing their food - you'll notice them eagerly scrambling at their cage bars in anticipation of a tasty treat!

Agility

Because they have quite large bodies and short legs, cavies are not particularly agile. They can sprint quite fast, but they have trouble dealing with obstacles, and cannot climb steep slopes. For this reason, it's best to give them a cage with a single level if at all possible.

However, they are very good swimmers, and swim surprisingly large distances. Having said that, they will only take to the water when they are in danger, and they should never be forcibly put into water, as they will become scared.

Language

Cavies love to communicate with each other, and do so through a series of sounds. They have a huge variety of unique noises, and it is very enjoyable to sit and listen to them chattering to each other in their own special language.

Occasionally you might hear one of your cavies making a singing noise just like a bird. It is enchanting to experience, although it can distress any other pigs, so you may have to remove them from the cage until the singing stops.

Memory

Cavies have a very good memory, and can memorise a path through a maze for a number of months. They are also able to remember who their owner is, which is a fantastic feeling and leads to a special relationship between you and your animals.

Nervousness

Guinea pigs are quite nervous animals, and can be frightened by loud or sudden sounds. Because of this, try to approach their cage carefully, and don't make any sudden sounds near them. If your guinea pigs do get worried, talk to them in a soothing, gentle voice until they have calmed down.
