The pike is a very popular game fish that is mostly found in the Northern parts of the world

. They have some very unique features that sets them apart from other fish such as, the long and slender body it has. The pike has a long head, a snout and some very sharp teeth. They are part of the Esox family and they will normally be an olive green color that changes to a yellowish color on their sides. They also have a white belly and some will have dark spots on their fins and a few will have reddish colored fins.

The pike have "sensory pores" that are very large found under the lower jaw and on the head. They usually have a light colored spot on the flank that is shaped like a bar and they don't have any scales on the lower part of the gills. This is a very active species that prefer living in clear water with lots of weeds. Catching pike can be a little harder than some of the other species so, it helps if you have a few tips to help you get started.

1. Inspect Your Tackle - If you want to catch a lot of pike, you have to make sure your tackle is up to the challenge. Always inspect your tackle to make sure everything is in good shape and ready to use. Worn out tackle can cost you a nice catch and they are also a safety hazard. Treble hooks are recommended for this species as long as they are not bendable and they should always be sharp. It's also a good idea to take along extras because you never know when you'll need them.

2. Choose Your Bait Wisely - The bait you use is very important. Live bait is preferred by many anglers because it usually gets a good response in most any fishing condition. The best live bait to use include herring, trout, mackerel, sardines and eel. If you prefer, you can also use dead bait because this is a species that will strike at just about anything. The best lures to use for pike include rapalas, daredevils, spoons, spinners, thundersticks, crankbaits and jigs.

3. Choose the Right Fishing Line - It's a good idea to not use monofilament line when fishing for pike because they have very sharp teeth that will easily bite right through it. For this reason, cable fishing line is recommended.

4. Fly Fishing - Fly Fishing has steadily grown in popularity over the years when it comes to fishing for pike. The best fly rod will be about ten feet long and streamers and tube flies work very well.

5. Have Patience - When the pike takes the bait they have a tendency of hitting it and then letting go several times before they actually take it for good. If you try to set the hook too soon, you'll lose the catch. You need to be patient and wait for the float to go under and then set the hook for the best results.
