5 Important Things You Should Know About Massage Therapy
The five most important things you should know about massage therapists.
There are many questions one would have when looking for a massage therapist. Before considering service, one should know these five things to get the most out of your service.
How much does a massage therapist cost?
Typically, a certified professional massage therapist will range depending on his facility and experience. A standard Swedish massage can range anywhere from $50 to $75 an hour and can go up from there.
Overnight spas typically charge quite a bit more as they are seen as a specialty service and only employ top most talented therapists. Their rates can even be as much as $300 a session or more.
Specialty massages such as hot stone and specialty oiled massages can vary wildly and it is best to inquire about pricing and duration from the booking agency.
How do I know if someone is certified and qualified?
There are a lot of massage schools more interested in profit and business, than in training qualified massage therapists. In fact, I know a few schools who have business teachers on staff and no massage therapists.
Also, you want to make sure that the therapist is certified. There is a National Certification Agency for massage therapists called, National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB). All states do not require a national certification, although you can be sure that therapist who acquire it are dedicated to their craft since it requires them to take a standardized test. To find out which states require NCBTMB, go to http://www.ncbtmb.org.
As long as the Massage Therapist is licensed in your respective state, they have followed the required certification requirements.
Where can I find a licensed and insured massage therapist?
There are many places to find reliable massage therapists. The best places are day spas, where therapists are essentially employees who are certified and have all the tools available for the best experience possible.
Sometimes, freelance specialists can be found on the internet for a reduced rate. It is important, however, to ask for proof of license and insurance if available as there are many people willing to offer services without proper training.
Can the massage therapist come to my home?
While many therapists work only out of a spa, gym, or other health facility, specialty appointments can be made if one is not able to travel.
Many times, an independent therapist may be available to make house calls, but in these cases several important questions such as qualifications and referrals must be asked to determine if the therapist is able to meet your needs.
What will my first visit be like?
Typically, a qualified, experienced therapist will ask several general questions about your needs and history. It is important to be very specific and detailed in your description if you have health issues as any type of issues may create complications in your therapy.
Then, an assessment will be made as to the duration and type of procedure that the therapist will perform, much like a doctor would treat a patient. After all, your personal massage therapist, if licensed, knows very much about the nature of physical illness and can help you to recover quickly.
