5 Precautions To Take When Going Night Skiing

The prospect of skiing at night can be both invigorating and intimidating

. Fortunately, by following the night skiing safety precautions listed below, you can overcome the worry that often comes along with trying a new activity.

1. Ask a Friend to Tag Along.

A buddy will help keep you safe. Should you happen to ski outside of boundaries accidentally, for instance, your friend will notice and get you back on course. We recommend that each of you wear a distinctive ski outfit and an LED headlamp. This will make it easier for you to find each other on the slopes.

2. Abide by the Skier Responsibility Code.

Staying in control is the primary directive of the Skier Responsibility Code, a set of shared guidelines that help all downhill riders stay safe. If you're not familiar with the skier responsibility code, here are its tenets:

-Avoid stopping in areas where you can't be seen from above, or where you could obstruct other skiers.

-It is your responsibility to avoid skiers ahead of you on the slopes. -Follow all resort signs; don't venture off piste.

-Look uphill while merging with another trail. Yield to skiers on the merging path.

3. Check that your ride is in Excellent Condition.

Driving in the mountains always requires special caution, since weather conditions can change so quickly at higher elevations. Because nighttime temperatures are colder, you're more likely to encounter icy roads when driving to and from your nocturnal skiing adventure. To make sure you get to and from the resort safely, take the time to check your fluid levels, tire traction, and battery before heading to the hills. Use an LED headlamp to carry out this performance check-up. We also suggest keeping an LED headlamp in your car, so that if you need to put on chains or perform other maintenance tasks at night, you won't have to struggle with vision.

4. Dress in Warm Layers.

Wearing right clothes could save your life in an emergency situation. To avoid hypothermia and frostbite, and to easily adjust your attire according to local conditions, you should wear several layers of clothing. It may help to think about your night skiing outfit in three general layers: 1) The Wicking Layer, made of wicking material that will draw sweat away from your skin, keeping your dry, 2) The Insulating Layer, ideally a wool or fleece layer that keeps the cold out while keeping your body heat in, and 3) The Protection Layer, a shell that offers protection against water and wind. You should also bring accessories to keep your neck, ears, hands, and head warm while skiing.

5. Bring an LED Headlamp.

There's one more accessory you'll want in your night skiing ensemble: an LED Headlamp. Wearing an LED headlamp will increase your visibility on the slopes, and thereby reduce your chances of getting into an accident. If you don an LED headlamp, other people will be able to steer clear of you more easily. Think of wearing an LED headlamp as the slope-side equivalent of defensive driving.

Coast's HL7 Focusing LED headlamp from Coast is excellent for skiing at night. It offers a dimming switch to help you maximize battery life in your LED headlamp. Night skiers will also appreciate that the HL7 LED headlamp includes a large, easy-to-operate power switch that is accessible even to gloved hands.
