. A story of young love which blossoms in the heart of an island off the coast of New England, Moonrise Kingdom takes you back in the 1960's to follow the journey of two young lovers as they search for a place where they can be together.

It is shot on 16mm film
This gives a big question mark to many but it is no brainer. 16mm simply refers to the width of the film used for the movie. Moonrise Kingdom is shot in Super 16 format which is commonly used for low-budget, minimalist movies.
So, what's with the format?
The use of Super 16 format is an indication that performance is the focus of the movie. This is Wes Anderson's first film set in the past making the use of 16mm film appropriate and I doubt that this is a low-budget film. This is also a challenge for him the fact that the cast is composed of veteran and rookie actors which is further explained in number 2.
A "balanced" cast
This is the debut film of Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward who play Sam and Suzy - the central characters of the story, along with other young actors in the background. And for adult roles, the movie features an ensemble cast of veteran actors: Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Bob Balaban as the narrator.
So, how is this interesting?
Many film makers would agree that casting veteran actors with the rookies would likely lead into a disaster with regard to experience and it's even riskier if the rookies are children making their debut movie. We often see this kind of casting in family-themed movies but Moonrise Kingdom is different - it's a love story and no, it's not exactly a Romeo and Juliet rip-off.
It's a comedy with unlikely actors
We have seen Frances McDormand in comedy films by the Coen Brothers and Bill Murray made us laugh in Ghost Busters and Groundhog Day that's why they are perfect for the wife and husband roles.
But when was the last time did you saw Bruce Willis and Edward Norton doing comedy?
Me neither or perhaps they are not well-known in that genre.
Same goes with Tilda Swinton and Jason Schwartzman who some consider as extraneous in this film as one may wonder how their characters will develop throughout the plot.
It all boils down to the versatility of these actors and how they will portray their characters is something to watch out for.
Curious setting
So, Moonrise Kingdom is a movie about young love... then why in 1960's in an island off the coast of New England?
Perhaps the setting gives color and somewhat nostalgic feel to the plot. Plus, Anderson is known for his love for the natural world and creating an imaginary town in an isolated island makes the movie more interesting.
It's a love story with a twist
Ok, I know this can be considered as a common genre but kids being the main characters of a rather bizarre young love story in a curious setting - I have a hunch for an exciting twist somewhere in the story that even the non-likers of the puppy love genre would be curious about.
