5 Rules Of The Road You Need To Know When Driving In Florida

One of the most popular tourist destinations to visit with children (according to Visit Florida

, it was estimated that over 20 million people visited Florida in the second quarter of 2010), thanks largely to the sheer number of theme parks that are available and the glorious summer weather, the issue that many people face when visiting Florida is that it can be an extremely expensive holiday.

Usually due to the amount of theme parks that are visited, people often look for cheaper accommodation, but are put off due to them being far away from the main attractions.

However, this shouldn't be a problem if you're willing to car hire Florida. A popular and affordable option, make use of car hire Florida and you'll be able to get accommodation wherever you wish.

Although many of the rules of the road in America are similar to those in the UK, there are some notable differences - excluding the fact that Americans drive on the right hand side of the road - that are worth taking note of.

1. You can turn right at a red traffic light - if you come to an intersection and your traffic light is on red but you want to turn right, you're legally allowed to do so as long as you first come to a complete stop and when you do move you are not obstructing any other traffic or causing risk to people crossing the road.

2. You have to stop completely for a school bus - unless you're on a highway, if you come across a school bus with its light flashing, you have to come to a complete stop, even if it's on the other side of the road.

Don't think you can crawl past, either. Aside from the fact it's illegal no matter how slow you go, you're likely to get a lot of abuse from locals.

3. An intersection requires for you to stop and give away - whilst a lot of intersections will have traffic lights, some of the smaller or more rural ones won't and therefore it's important to know how to proceed.

Unlike in the UK, where if two people are at a junction the unwritten rule is to let the person who isn't crossing a lane go first, the unwritten rule in Florida is that you should allow the person at the junction first to go before you.

It's also important to understand that you have to come to a complete stop at an intersection.

4. You can undertake - if you're travelling along a highway and traffic is heavy, you're legally allowed to undertake cars.

Keep in mind, though, that although you're also allowed to undertake cars when there is no traffic, most people tend to stick to overtaking.

5. Carrying alcohol in the main section of the car is illegal - if you've just stopped by a store to pick up some beers before you head back to your accommodation, make sure you put them in the boot of the car before you drive off. Even if the beer is unopened, it's illegal to carry it in the main part of the car.
