5 Rules of De-Cluttering Before You Move

There's nothing like moving house to reveal just how much stuff you have

. In the cupboard under the stairs, under the bed, behind the shed, it's guaranteed that you've got more than you ever realised. And now you need to sort out is a removalist for all this stuff and pack it all up, right? Wrong. Unwanted and unneeded possessions can weigh you down. You don't need your new home to be filled with your already-stagnant belongings. It's time to de-clutter. Here's 5 simple, firm rules to help you de-clutter before you move:

If you don't wear it you don't need it. You need to be brutal about this. Clothes and shoes that either don't fit anymore or are no longer in fashion have no place in your new wardrobe. Don't wait for something to come back into style; hoarding is never fashionable. If you've still got a metric ton of clothing left after this then it's time to take the culling a step further. The easiest way to do this is to sort your clothes into two piles: items you need and items you don't need. Go through your whole wardrobe, pick items up and make a split decision about which pile they belong in.

Unfinished projects. Boxes full of sewing, paints and canvases, half-finished woodworking projects and strips of felt and leather. Do they really need to come? Creativity is necessary and an outlet is invaluable, but if you haven't finished a project after a few months it becomes just another chore. Cleanse your palette and begin again in your new place.

Keeping emotions out of it. Unwanted wedding, housewarming or birthday presents are not, nor have they ever been, your friends. No matter who gave you the gift, the fact that it's been locked in a cupboard, still in its box, is a sign that it is clearly not your style. Moving house is the perfect time to lose' your unwanted gifts. Have an eBay sale. There are services that will photograph, list and sell your belongings on eBay, splitting the profits with you.

Books and magazines. If you've already read it or (be honest now) never will, there's no reason to keep it around; sell it or give it away. Books are easy to find homes for and it i a much better thing to have them read than left sitting collecting dust on your shelf. Not to mention they're heavy and can add significantly to the total weight and number of your boxes.

Arrange to have a garage sale. The key to a successful garage sale is to plan it properly. Arrange a day (or even two), invite others and make fliers. With the date looming over you not to mention the thought of some extra cash you'll be more inclined to find things to sell.

De-cluttering is a cleansing, cathartic process, but it needs to be done properly. There's nothing like walking into your new home feeling like you've shed a layer of skin. You'll feel refreshed and anew. Now the tricky part is not to start hoarding again.
