5 Signs that Indicate you're Fit for Volunteer Firefighting

It's true that anyone can do volunteer work

It's true that anyone can do volunteer work. But not everyone is fit for volunteer firefighting. Unlike other types of volunteer work, this one is more complicated and more dangerous. It requires utmost dedication to be able to carry out the job effectively. If you're thinking about being a fire fighter volunteer for the rural fire brigade, here are some signs that will tell you if you're right for this job or not.

Sign # 1 - You have a brave heart

Obviously, this type of volunteer work is not for the faint hearted. Even if only choose to do desk jobs, there will still be times that you might be required to go on field with the firefighters. When this happens, you should be ready to take on the challenge of facing fire and rescuing people. If you faint at the sight of fire or you can't stand being around anything that puts your life in danger, then skip this and look for another kind of work.

Sign # 2 You're flexible and reliable

Fires don't have a schedule. They happen any time of the day including the wee hours in the morning and during the weekends. This means that volunteer firefighters are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You should only participate in this kind of work if you're willing to be called upon to report to the fire brigade while you are in the middle of your sleep or even after you've planned for a weekend getaway. Otherwise, find something else that would have a regular 9-5 schedule.

Sign # 3 You've undergone or willing to undergo fire training

You cannot be in this type of work if you don't know how to use a fire hose or a powder fire extinguisher. It's not only the professional firefighters that undergo trainings. Of course, the volunteers do too. This way, you'll know what to do when you come face to face with an actual fire. If you don't have background or training on firefighting, you should be willing to undergo one.

Sign # 4 You have genuine desire to help

People who want to volunteer as firefighters should have genuine desire to help other people. This is the best way to ensure that you would be able to do your work properly. If you only want to do this because your friends are in it too or you think it's a great way to pass your vacant time, then you might not be able to do the job well.

Sign # 5 You don't mind having little or no pay

Like most volunteer works, this one also has little or no pay. This is why, it's called "volunteer work." If you're looking for something that will make you earn big bucks then this is not the place for you.

Being a volunteer firefighter is one of the most rewarding jobs you'll ever get to experience. Yes, it comes with some major drawbacks like putting your life in danger but the rewards that you'll get from it are worth all the trouble.
