5 Sports You Can Expect To See Dominating Canadian Tv
In the UK, our favourite and most watched sport is football
. Whether it's watching Manchester United on Sky TV or a local pub team on a Sunday morning in the nearby park, whether you're a fan of it or not, it's easy to realise that UK sport is dominated by football.
Whilst Canada does have its fair share of football - or soccer - fans, it is not as popular as several other sports and the following 5 sports are those that you should expect to see on TV if you apply for a Canada visa and immigrate to the country.
1. Ice hockey - the sport that is arguably the most synonymous with Canada, ice hockey is the country's official winter sport, as stated in the National Sports of Canada Act 1994.
A sport that has been played since the early nineteenth century, Canadian teams dominate the Stanley Cup Championship league table, with the Montreal Canadiens scooping the title 24 times - the only American team to come close is the Detroit Red Wings with 11 championships.
2. Lacrosse - with ice hockey being the country's official winter sport, lacrosse is Canada's official summer sport.
A game that has roots deep in Native America, lacrosse is a game that isn't seen much in the UK but is, to all intents and purposes, hockey. The difference is that rather than passing the ball along the floor, it's thrown from player to player with rackets that are fitted with nets.
3. Canadian football - according to a survey in the Canadian Press on 8 June 2006, Canadian football is now one of the country's most popular spectator sports, second only to ice hockey.
Similar to American football, there are some notable differences, such as the size of the playing field (Canadian football is played on a field that is 331 feet long by 193 feet long, whereas American football is played on a field measuring 298 feet long by 160 feet wide) and the number of players in each team (Canadian football sees 12 players on each time, whilst American football has 11).
4. Basketball - famously thought to be an American game, basketball is in fact a game that was created by a Canadian (James Naismith was tasked with developing a game that could be played indoors throughout the winter when working as a PE instructor in Massachusetts in 1891).
Whilst basketball is particularly popular in Canada, the country only fields one team in the National Baseball League (NBA) - the Toronto Raptors are part of the Atlantic division of the Eastern Conference.
5. Baseball - similar to basketball, baseball is stereotypically an American game, but it draws its roots from Canada in the middle of the nineteenth century and the very first baseball stadium is in Canada (Labatt Park, which can still be visited in London, Ontario).
Also similar to basketball, although baseball does have a loyal Canadian following, the country only has one team that plays Major League Baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays (although several teams have been competed successfully in previous years, such as the Montreal Royals and Toronto Maple Leafs).
