, don't just head straight to your favourite retailer and purchase the laptop you need. Instead, follow these 5 steps to ensure you get the best deal possible when purchasing your new computer.

1. Before you start looking online for your new laptop, you should first understand fully what it is that you want. Do you need wireless internet capability? Large hard drive? Lots of memory? Lightweight? How about a rough idea of the price tag?

By having a list of 5 or 6 necessary aspects that the laptop needs to have, you'll find that once you begin looking, the whole process will be a lot more streamlined as you can constantly refer to your list, taking out of the equation any laptops that don't meet your criteria.

2. Whilst a list is crucial to finding the right laptop for you, don't be too restrictive and stick to it exactly - instead, see if there are any other ways to meet your criteria should the laptop be at a bargain price.

For example, if you found a laptop in one of the online reverse auctions and it was likely that you could purchase it for a price well under your budget, but it didn't have the 500GB hard drive that you counted as a necessity, then don't disregard it completely. In this instance, you could see if it would be cost efficient to purchase an external hard drive to take the combined storage capacity to the 500GB amount that was wanted.

3. When you begin shopping, start by looking for discount vouchers that you could use online. These discount vouchers are freely available and can save you a substantial amount of money on your purchase. There may not be a voucher available for the store you're wanting to make a purchase from, but the few minutes it will take to check in the search engines is well worth it.

4. As well as discount vouchers, cash back websites can be a great way to save money on your purchase. In essence, cash back websites work by providing you with a certain amount of money should you make the purchase through their website.

For example, imagine you saw a laptop for sale on Website A that cost 300 pounds. Go direct to Website A and you'll be charged 300 pounds. However, go through the cash back website (assuming that the retailer is featured) and you may receive a 10% deduction, meaning that the total cost would actually only be 270 pounds.

5. Finally, don't just restrict yourself to normal internet retailers. Instead, take into consideration online auctions, whether the traditional formats or something a little less known but just as good, such as reverse auctions.
