The term web design is used to describe a wide range of skills

. Some of the basic ones include: web graphics designing, authoring a website, and designing the interface of the website. There are many web design companies and individuals that develop sites for several companies and businesses, especially when a professional looking site is desired by the client. When considering the entire web design, the work is broken down in to smaller projects, and generally teams are put together to work on different aspects of the site, and to properly maintain the online site.

The entire design process is what the term web design is used to describe. The design of the front end design which includes the mark up work, is what is considered website development. Due to the fact that so many graphics, animations, designs, and different styles of typography go in to the genre of web design, although it is a fairly new concept, and has a relatively short history, it is still something that is necessary in the normal course of business, and several business owners rely on website design companies on a day to day basis in order to run and maintain their online site page.

In order to do their work, web designers have a wide array of tools that are available to them, and the different tools that are going to be used, will be determined by what part of the web design process they are currently in. Because there are continually changing standards in software and in the world of technology, there are new tools and upgrades which come along for designers to use quite often. Vector and raster graphing packages are used by web design professionals, in order to create the formats, designs, and images that are seen on the site pages they create. From SEO tools, to typography, or mark up tools, there are a wide range of tools that are used by designers, in order to develop and create the web design for many online sites.

There are also various skills and techniques which a web designer has to learn, some of these include:

- typography (different fonts and typefaces used on a site);

- page layout (should be done in a manner to improve navigability for the end user);

- quality of code;

- visual design (whether it is set up for a specific age demographic, or whether the site is for some kind of business, the right design features have to be set in place); and,

- the user experience design (making sure the end user can easily understand how the website works).

These, and several others are used by web designers, in order to develop a cohesive site, and a design which users are going to easily learn.

No matter what type of design is made, or what site is created, the end result of web design is to make a site that users can easily navigate, and get a hang of when they are visiting a specific online site.
