5 Things Latin America Is Famous For
Latin America holds many of the worlds wonders
, like Machi Pichu and the Galapagos islands. It's fortunate location at the center of the Ecuator makes it an ideal climate in most Latin American countries. Latin America is also known for it's friendly people, good food, and famous festivals.
1. Some of the world's best known carnivals are the ones held in Brazil. Named Brazilian Canaval, the festivities are held four days before Ash Wednesday and coincide with the Roman Catholic practices of Lent. The word carnaval come from the word carnelevare, which literally means "remove" meat. The Brazilian Carnivals exhibits some differences from their European counterpart, having mixed African, native, German, and Euro elements. The style, rhythm, participation, and costumes vary from the different areas of Brazil. Some states have a big celebration in the streets and some states just have an annual recreational ball downtown.
2. The waterfalls with the world's greatest average annual flow are the Iguazu Falls. These falls lie on the borders of Parana, Brazil and Misiones, Argentina, with two-thirds of them being in Argentina. Although they suffered from a four-month drought in 2006, the Iguazu Falls were a candidate for the New7Wonders of Nature. These falls were discovered by Spanish Conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca in 1541. Legend has it that a god intended on marrying a beautiful aborigine women, named Naipi, who fled with her mortal lover in a canoe. Enraged, the god "sliced" the river creating the waterfalls, and condemning them to an eternal fall.
3. Latin women are some of the most sought after women in the entertainment business including modeling, movie roles, and commercials. Famous actresses/models/singers like Sofia Vergara, Eva Mendez, and Shakira, only to name of few, keep entertainment moguls interested with their curvaceous bodies, exotic looks, and accents.
4. Since it was not plundered by the Spanish when they conquered the Incas, one of the most important cultural and sacred sites in Peru is Machu Picchu. Only 50 Miles from Cuzco, Peru, it remains the most visited tourist attraction in Peru. The Incas constructed this city around 1462 in a saddle between two mountains 8,000 ft. (2,430 m.) above sea level. There are three primary archaeological treasures: the Intihuatana (believed to be an astronomical clock or calendar), The Temple of the Sun, and The Room of the Three Windows. Machu Picchu is often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas," because its inhabitants were most likely wiped out by a smallpox pandemic. Virtually unknown to the outside world, this lost city stayed unexplored until 1911, when American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention.
5. The Galapagos Islands consist of thirteen main and five smaller islands. These islands lie around the equator in the Pacific Ocean. The most notable feature of these islands is the abundance and diversity of wildlife. There are some 40,000 inhabitants living on these islands, Spanish being the principle language. Even though the Galapagos Islands are located so close to the equator the Humboldt Current brings cold water in, causing frequent drizzles during most of the year. The conservation of wildlife is a germane issue concerning these islands. This is because of foreigners to the islands bringing alien plant and animal life to the habitat, thus damaging the ecosystem.
