5 Things To Do In Austin

New to Austin? It's a lucky person who gets to discover the Texas capitol for the first time

. Along with visiting the actual Capital building and grounds, here are some suggestions on five things to do for a new resident of Austin:

Eat Barbeque

It seems like a person can hardly walk ten steps in this town without tripping over a barbeque restaurant, however, not all barbecue is created equally. If looking for something while exploring the Sixth and Fourth Street districts, Iron Works BBQ on Red River off Sixth Street is quirky with delicious food. For a little more upscale venue, the County Line Barbecue on Bee Caves Road is a nice choice. For the quintessential rustic barbecue experience, nothing beats the Salt Lick Barbecue in Driftwood, which serves a family style feast. Stubb's Bar-B-Q on Red River has great barbecue and live music, which helps fulfill the next must-do.

Listen to live music

Austin is called the Live Music Capital for good reason. If barbecue is plentiful, live music is overflowing in Austin. Venues like Stubb's, the Continental Club, Hole in the Wall, Saxon Pub or Antone's all offer that only-in-Austin experience. Entertainers and show times can be found in the Austin-American Statesman entertainment section every Thursday. Also try the free Friday concert series at noon on the steps of City Hall.

Walk along Town Lake

The section of the Colorado River that runs through the center of Austin is officially called Lady Bird Lake, but everyone still calls it Town Lake. The system of trails and parks that run along the shores of Town Lake are great for running, biking and strolling. In the summer and fall, the bat scene under the Congress Avenue bridge is a unique Austin experience best seen up close from the Town Lake trails.

Explore your neighborhood

Austin is a city full of parks and greenbelts, and these jewels are often hidden right in the middle of busy city sections or quiet neighborhoods. With little fanfare or much signage, trailheads can be found on residential streets or even the side of the highway. The Barton Creek Greenbelt, for example, has many entrances in neighborhoods and a public entrance right off Mopac. Unexpected discoveries can be made by just walking through a neighborhood, not to mention it's a great way to meet the neighbors.

Update your license and registration

While out exploring and enjoying Austin, don't forget the civic obligations of moving to a new city, like updating driver's license, registering to vote and updating car registration. Be sure to allow ample time at the Department of Motor Vehicles, which usually takes at least two hours. The downtown location on 15th Street is not as busy as some of the other locations.
