5 Things To Do In Essex

Essex is home to some of the oldest properties in England

. It is full of gorgeous gardens that have something in bloom every season of the year. Visitors can also enjoy great restaurants, fabulous pubs, and relaxing spas.

1. Audley End House and Gardens

Audley End was built, in 1538, as the mansions for Henry VIII's Lord Chancellor, Sir Thomas Audley. His grandson, Thomas Howard, the first Earl of Suffolk, rebuilt the house almost a century later. It was renamed the Palace of Audley End, partially due to its massive size. It was one of England's largest mansions, until Suffolk fell into massive debt and the house went into decline. Complete with lavish doors, and stunning bedrooms, this home has all of the classic English finishing touches. Visitors mustn't miss the beautiful gardens. There is the parkland, the parterre, the organic kitchen garden, and the pond garden, each more stunning then the last.

2. RHS Garden Hyde Hall

For those of you who can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon then wandering around a beautiful garden, then I highly recommend that you visit RHS Garden Hyde Hall. Spring sees the eruption of violets, daffodils, rhododendrons and camellias. Autumn is the perfect time to go apple and berry picking amongst the many fruit trees and bushes on the property. In addition to beautifully coloured plants, the property is home to open fields, ponds, and hilltop gardens.

3. Lifehouse

If you're looking to really relax, take a trip to Lifehouse. The surrounding 130 acres of beautiful grounds and gardens that make up the property are enough to put you at ease, but there is more. A dedicated team of coaches offer services and training in fitness, nutrition, weight loss, and medicinal, alternative and holistic therapy. Guests can also unwind on their own with a variety of yoga, pilates, and swimming classes to choose from, as well as walking and biking trails.

4. Vineyards

There are a few vineyards in and around Essex, such as Mersea Island Vineyard and New Hall Vineyard, where guests can enjoy guided tours, delicious food, and exceptional wine. Wine tastings are available as well.

5. Dining:

In addition to drinking, there are lots of yummy places to eat. Oysters are harvested in many parts of Essex, and as a result, are often on the menu. Some delicious finds include, Blue Strawberry Bistro, The Ducane, and the Old Vienna.
