5 Tips For A Great Interview
Even though you may be the most excellent candidate for a particular job on paper
, with plenty of experience and qualifications to your name, you will struggle quite significantly if you are unable to make a good impression during the interview. Indeed, employers often cite poor interviewing skills as the number one reason why applicants, who were otherwise optimal candidates, are not invited for a follow-up interview or short-listed.
As the classic adage goes:
You only have one chance to make a good first impression.
What then should a candidate attending an interview do, and not do, in order to maximize their chances of success?
1)Body language speaks volumes. If you slouch during the interview, are unable/uncomfortable with making decent eye contact with the person conducting the interview, or fidget with your hair or jewelry, then this creates a very negative impression. To the employer, it makes you look bored, unconcerned with the interview, and shows a severe lack in manners, common courtesy and interest.
2)Dress smartly. Much like the issues identified above, dressing casually indicates that you are not taking the process seriously, and that you cannot be bothered to even make a token effort for your prospective employers sake. Keep the wacky tie at home, along with your jeans, Stetson and scuffed trainers!
3)Do some research about the company in question, and take the first opportunity to show your knowledge. Being able to quote facts about the company, such as a brand new product they have released, or proposed changes in shareholding policy shows initiative, interest, and commitment on your part.
4)Remain composed during the interview, and have all your paperwork on hand. There is nothing more unsettling or off-putting than to try and speak to someone who is flustered as they rifle through an ocean of paperwork and forms.
5)If you have any large gaps in your work history, be prepared for this. Employers will usually ask fairly pointed questions about these issues, and will do so for two primary reasons. Firstly, they will use it as an information gathering exercise to ascertain the reasons for the gaps. Secondly, they will gauge your ability (or lack thereof) to explain these credibly. You will get major bonus points if you are able to actually pre-empt your employer and raise these before they do. Doing so creates the impression of honesty and trustworthiness.
If you follow this advice, and are actually qualified for the position, you are sure to land that dream job.
