5 Tips For Beekeeping You Can't Miss
Engaging in beekeeping as either a hobby or a profession is a rewarding and interesting activity
. However, due to the complex nature of bees and their relationship with their environment, it is not an easy one. There are many things to learn about bees and how to take care of them, and you should think about the following points before you take up apiculture.
The Beehive - One of the earliest questions people think of is what type of beehive should I get? A popular model is called the Langstroth hive. This is made up of wooden frames that are easily removed by the beekeeper when harvesting honey. Alternatively, the top-bar hive is also used widely. Here, a range of bars are fitted to the ceiling of the hive from which the bees can hang combs of honey. However, these bars can only be used once by the bees and must then be replaced, so the Langstroth hive is perhaps a more financially viable model.
Bees - Learning a little about bees can help you take care of them in their new hive. It is important to know that bees only produce honey as an alternative source of food for when flower and plants numbers drop in autumn and winter. You can combat this by securing your own alternative sugar solution near the hive for the bees to eat when it gets cold. At least this way they won't eat your honey!
Equipment - Having the right equipment is also vital when looking after bees. Few beekeepers can operate without a smoker, a device that releases smoke at regular intervals over the bees to make them more docile. This will allow you to approach the hive and remove honey without the bees mistaking you for a predator and attacking you.
Clothing - You must also have the appropriate clothing when you are dealing with bees. Regular clothes do not protect against the bees stingers, so a thick beekeeping suit is worn which stops the stingers from touching the skin. Other protective clothing is also put on around vulnerable areas such as the face and mouth to minimize painful stings.
Guide - If you are just starting out looking after bees, or even if you have kept bees for a long time, you should think about purchasing a beekeeping guide. These guides can give you all sorts of useful information on beekeeping, answering questions you may have about the best way to do things or even raising questions that you hadn't previously thought of.
