5 Tips For Eliminating Drama In Your Relationships
Having drama in your relationships can cause immense amounts of stress and create big rifts between you and other people
. Drama can be something as simple as a misunderstanding, or as deep as fundamental disagreements that keep coming up again and again.
Unlike regular disagreements, drama is by definition highly emotional. Often time's other people are involved and the drama becomes open gossip.
So how can you remove this harmful behavior from your life? Here are five tips for doing so.
==> Start in the High Drama Areas
Instead of trying to eliminate drama from your life or all your relationships, start in the one area where it's having the highest cost.
Rate how much drama is in your life in these following areas: Your workplace, your home life, your romantic relationship and your friendships.
Start at the highest drama area then work your way down.
==> Start to Notice Patterns
Don't try to change anything just yet. For a week or two, just start paying more attention to drama.
Are there any patterns that emerge? Do they tend to involve the same people? Are there certain topics that tend to come up again and again?
Do you tend to play the same role in these drama scenarios? For example, do you usually find yourself to be in the victim role or the perpetrator role?
Who usually gossips about the drama?
==> Identify the Cause of Drama
Once you've actively been observing for a week or two, it's time to draw some conclusions.
Start by taking a good hard look at yourself. Are you the cause of any drama in your life? Can you honestly attribute most of the drama to other people, or are you in part to blame?
Look at topics. Are certain topics the ones that regularly bring up heated discussion?
See if you can draw up a list of causes. Having a solid understanding of what's causing the drama in your life is a crucial step towards resolving it.
==> Remove the Emotions and Address the Issues
Sometimes drama is just emotional noise. At other times however, it can be an emotional outlet for real issues that should be addressed.
If there are real issues that need to be brought to the table, do so with as little emotional attachment or baggage as possible.
One great way to reduce emotional baggage is to have a friend just listen to you vent for 15 minutes before you actually talk to the person who's causing the drama.
This allows you to get all the emotional energy out into the open. You can then begin a conversation with the person you need to talk to with a clean slate.
==> Lead Rather Than Blame
Whatever you want to see more of in your life, it first within yourself.
For example, let's say you want to see more acceptance of mistakes in the workplace.
Instead of blaming others for punishing the newcomer's mistakes too harshly, start by being accepting yourself.
Be accepting of the newcomer, but also be accepting of how your other co-workers are acting. Being more accepting first cultivates more acceptance in the workplace. Eventually, when you bring up the issue of going easier on the newcomer, people will see that you walk your talk.
These are five tips you can use to help you eliminate drama from your life. Drama can be an emotional vampire that sucks all your emotional strength and energy if you're not careful. Use the tips discussed in this article to flush drama from your life for good.
