1. Optimize Your Protein Consumption on the Alkaline Diet
If you listen to muscleheads and low-carb diet gurus, they will lead you to believe that protein is a miracle for building muscle and cutting fat. Nevertheless, the reality is that either too much or too little protein can hurt your health.
Protein is high in the minerals phosphorus and sulfur. When the protein has been digested, these minerals mix with water to make phosphoric and sulfuric acid. So while some protein is essential for wellness, too much protein creates too much acid.
2. Eat More Fruits and Vegetables on the Alkaline Diet
You have undoubtedly heard about the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables. These foods are high in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and nutritious phytochemicals. They are also filling, but are low in calories, making them suitable for weight loss. Finally, most fruits and vegetables help you build an alkaline diet because they are rich in potassium.
3. Cut Out Soft Drinks on the Alkaline Diet
Soft drinks are highly acidifying, and they're a huge source of empty calories. Enough said, right? However, please understand that I'm not just talking about colas and citrus-flavored soda pop. When I urge you to lay off the soft drinks, I'm also using that phrase to describe iced tea, energy drinks, sports drinks, and synthetic "vitamin waters."
4. Eat Baked Goods in Moderation for an Alkaline Diet
Besides bread, this category also includes items like bagels, crackers, pop tarts, and sweet rolls. The main ingredient in most baked goods is white flour, which besides being acidifying, is almost wholely lacking in nutritional value. Making a bad situation worse, these foods often contain sweeteners and bad fats as well.
5. Junk the Junk Food on Your Alkaline Diet
Processed food is high in fat and calories. It's also full of acid-producing ingredients, such as processed flours that are usually made from grains that were acid-forming in the first place. Then there are the low-quality fats, made worse by being highly refined, heated to high temperatures, then stored for long periods in warehouses and on grocery store shelves. Finally, there is a lot of sugar in the sweet snacks, and a lot of sodium in the salty ones.
Well, there you go: Five important rules for anyone who is following the alkaline diet. It can be a challenge to put these five rules into practice, but the result will be a thinner, more energetic, and healthier you.
