. The problem is that most buyers will never come back to the site to leave a review. This leaves sellers wondering how to get more reviews. Fortunately, there are a few ways to encourage people to post their experiences with a product.

1)Send buyers an email asking for a review. In the email, mention the product they bought to jog their memories. Many people don't leave reviews simply because they don't think of it.

2)Offer an incentive for leaving a review. This could be a percentage off of their next order or a flat rate discount. The size of the deal should be in keeping with the amount spent on an average order. Discounts don't have to be deep for review incentives.

3)Put a large link or button on the site that plainly says "review this product," "leave a review" or something similar. The message should be short and clear. One caveat: don't let the call for a review overshadow the "buy" button. Always remember that the main point of an e-commerce site is to get people to buy.

4)Put a message on the confirmation page asking people to come back and review the product after they've used it. While most people will forget about this note soon after reading it, it will help reinforce the message of the email you will send later.

5)If you already have some reviews for a product, make them prominent. When people see others discussing something, they will naturally want to join in and add their two cents.

Merchants may be apprehensive to allow open reviews. This is for good reason. An open review page is subject to spammers, internet trolls and even unreasonable customers. While outright censorship tends to backfire, steps need to be taken to keep things under control.

Moderation of all review pages is the most essential step to ensuring that they don't drive away customers instead of drawing them. In this scenario, the process of moderation refers to reading everything people try to put on the page before it goes live. This allows businesses the chance to weed out worthless posts while letting valid ones through.

The first type of post to moderate out, of course, is spam. Many spam bots will post their junk to any page that has a form. These posts should be summarily deleted since they are nothing but digital graffiti.

The second type of post that needs moderation is the overly hostile variety. If someone writes a review full of curse words and insults, it will need to be cleaned up before it goes live. These posts are also worthy of summary deletion if you so choose. Otherwise, visitors to your site will be outright offended.

It is important not to go overboard with the delete button. Remember that a couple of negative reviews, offset by plenty of positive ones, can make a review page look more legitimate. Resist the urge to dump a post just because its author didn't like the product.

To avoid any difficulties resulting from your moderation policy, state it clearly and professionally. Either put it directly on the page with the review form or put a prominent link to it from that page. This way, no one will have a valid reason to complain if their review doesn't appear, and you'll be able to keep your review page up to snuff.
