5 Tips for Keeping in Touch After Your Move
Nobody should cling to the past, but once your removal is complete and you've left
your old neighbourhood it can be all too easy to cut off from it altogether, especially if you've left under awkward circumstances. The distractions of your new home will keep you busy enough to forget all about where you came from. By no means is this a bad thing. After all, you've got to move on with your life. But if you've left good friends behind they'll love it if you keep in touch. Some may even expect it anyway. Even if you've been gone from your old home for some time, getting back in touch is easy enough, especially with with technology being what it is. Here's 5 tips to help make sure you're still a presence in your old town:
Plan a return visit. Before you move away, plan to return within the year if possible. If you plan to return before you move there's less chance of being distracted by the bright lights of your new home and forgetting all about your old. You can have fun with this by only letting a few people in on your return and surprising everyone. Of course this can be a little difficult to plan if you're moving interstate or even overseas, or if you're moving for monetary reasons. You could always make people promise to come and visit you instead!
Send a postcard. Once you're settled in give it two or three weeks send a postcard back to your friends and neighbours to let them know how you're faring in your new place. It doesn't need to be detailed; you could just use the same wording on each. This will send a simple message a) that you've not forgotten them and b) letting them know that you're happy (or unhappy, as it may be) in your new home.
Sign up for newsletters. Your community may have a newsletter. If so, find out if there's an email version and sign up. If not, many local stores will have newsletters that will include snippets of information about the area. Ask at sporting clubs too, or if you went to school in the area ask about a newsletter aimed at old students.
Embrace technology. Social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter will keep you keep in touch whether you'd like to or not. If you don't have an account, sign up and let people know you're online or try to find them after your move. Often people will find you anyway if they know you've got an account.
Care packages. This is especially effective for those people who've not been in contact for a while. Sending a local sports group or team, or just a special person, a gift package or bunch of flowers is likely to make their day and will guarantee that they'll contact you. You don't need to make a habit of it (that would be very expensive), but it's a great way to re-open up a strong line of communication.
A little communication is all it takes. Methods of communication are so numerous and easy nowadays, neglecting a good friend would almost have to be done on purpose. There are multiple options for making sure you're still in the minds of those you left behind, and none of them require a lot of commitment.
