5 Tips to Improve Fuel Economy for Cars, Trucks
, and Diesels
Every dollar matters in this day and age. Being able to squeeze a little bit more out of every gallon of gas is one way to keep a little extra green in your pocket. Here are few easy tips you can put into practice right now that should help you get everything you can out of your next gallon of gas. These are in no particular order.
#1 Get your oil changed when you are suppose to.
Most people are pretty good about this, but others just let it go. 3000 miles is the bench mark is and a good number at that. Some of the new vehicles have 'maintenance minders' that tell you when to change the oil (usually between 3000 and 5000 miles), but you will never go wring changing the oil every 3000 miles. Use the recommended grade of oil and you will likely see a 1% improvement in your MPG rating.
#2 Make sure to get the "Check Engine Light" checked out
We think if we ignore it will go away, but the light is there for a reason. In fact, one of the most common causes of that light to go on is a faulty oxygen sensor. "So, what?" you may say. Well, what if I told you that a faulty oxygen sensor can reduces your engine performance by 40%? Just take the time to get the light checked if it comes on. It will be worth your while.
#3 Get rid of your roof rack
If you tool around with a roof rack you are making your car fight wind resistance. It may not look like much up there, but believe it or not, you may be losing up to 2% of your vehicles performance. If you don't use it, get rid of it.
#4 Tire Pressure matters
There are some government studies out there that say you can get up to 25% increase in your fuel efficiency by keeping your tires properly inflated. 25%!! All new cars have Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems standard. Pay attention when it goes on. If you have an older car, check your tires every couple weeks. 25% is quite the improvement and worth your time.
#5 Lose excess weight (from the car)
As little as an extra 100 pounds can lose you a couple percent points in your efficiency. Anything you don't need in the truck, take it out. If you live in a place that has snow, clean of the whole car not just the windshield.
As you can see, just a few of these can dramatically help you get better fuel efficiency. Put a few into practice and your wallet will thank you.
