5 Tips to Reusing Plastic Bags
While researching to write an article on facts about recycling plastic bags, I discovered many articles on creative ways to reuse them. Even though there are some good ideas out there, many focus on reusing the plastic bag only once.
For example, a website suggests wrapping plastic bags "around paintbrushes if you stop mid-project to prevent the paint from drying out." You may think this is an excellent idea, however, what will happen to these bags now that it is contaminated with paint? It is no longer suitable for recycling. You should never put paint or oil contaminated plastics in the recycling bin.
To achieve sustainability, we need to come up with creative ways to reuse plastic type bags as many times as possible making sure it stays contaminant free, that is, away from glues, paints, and other chemicals. When these bags are no longer usable, it should be recycled at proper recycling facilities. This way, these plastic type bags can be recycled into something useful.
**Most curbside recycling programs actually do not accept plastic bags as they clog up conveyor belts slowing down processing speeds. Do your research before putting grocery or other plastic type bags in the recycling bin.
Here my top 5 ways of reusing and recycling plastic bags:
Always keep plastic bags (including grocery bags and bags from department stores) in your car. Reusing grocery bags is actually much more eco-friendly than using thicker tote bags made from cotton or non-woven fabric (lower carbon emissions).
Bring used plastic bags to the supermarket. After unloading the purchased items at home, I always tie each bag in knots and bring them immediately back to the car. I find that if I leave them on my kitchen top, I tend to forget.
Use DIY checkout counters so you can fill each bag with more items. You also have better control over how to load each bag. For bags that are about to break, I like to fill it with lighter items.
Use plastic bags as trashcan liners for paper or dry items only. When emptying the wastebasket, do not throw out the plastic bag. Pour the contents into a larger trash bag for disposal.
Store products using plastic bags at home. They're great for keeping dust away. You can also use these bags to sort items in your freezer. Bring plastic bags in your luggage case when traveling to store dirty clothing.
