5 Top Tips to Become a Tent Pro

1. What size of tent do you need? How many people will be sleeping in it.

Bringing a tent that is too big can make it impossible to warm up on cold nights, mean extra weight and require extra space. But, a larger tent is great for families and kids because it gives the kids play space.

Many manufacturers now make tents in long lengths which is a perfect option for tall campers and hikers. The longer length is also great for backpackers who want that extra bit of room to store their gear inside.

2. What seasons do you need your tent for? Most campers will only need a three season tent but if you expect to do any winter camping you'll need a four season or winter tent. These types of tents use heavier poles and fabric to stand up to the toughest weather conditions. They are heavier than 3 season tents and usually more expensive.

3. Always, always stake down your tent. Most tents these days are freestanding tents but they still need to be staked down. Tents these days are very lightweight and even with your camping sleeping bags inside, a good gust of wind will quickly take your tent away! Don't leave your camping tent to chance.

4. No need for a wet tent! Our bodies generate heat and moisture build up inside our tents but there is no need for condensation build up. Prevent it by using your tent vents properly.

let the cool air in near the bottom of your tent -- create a low vent through the bottom of the door.

let the warm, moist air out near the top of your tent -- the top of a side vent or second door of your tent.

5. Store it right. If you're backpacking in wet weather and need to pack up a wet tent for the day, that's alright. But once your home, even from car camping always, always air out your tent until it's completely dry. Any moisture in or on your tent will create mildew and mold if it's packed away wet.

Become an expert by following these 5 easy guidelines and don't forget to try before you buy! Check out each tent you like in the store before you purchase your new home away from home. And then set it up in your backyard or living room just to make sure you know how to use it and you don't have any missing or broken parts before heading out.

Happy Camping!
