5 Types of Yeast Infections

Yeast infections can occur in different parts of the body. Candidiasis more commonly known as yeast infections is a common infection that affect both men and women.

There are many different species of the Candidiasis yeast fungi with the most common species being Candida albicans.

The most common types of yeast infections are:

Vaginal Yeast Infections

Oral Yeast Infections

Skin Yeast Infections

Penile Yeast Infections

Diaper Yeast Infections

Let's now look at the specifics of each of these types of Candida infections.

A candida infection of the vagina is the most common form of candida. The rapid growth of the yeast caused an excessive build up within the inside of the vagina and

can quickly spread outward onto the inner and outer vaginal lips. The most common symptoms of a vaginal infection include redness, itching, burning pain and an off white discharge with a consistency similar to cottage cheese. In more severe cases of the infection, the rash can turn into sores and blisters that could bleed if scratch of irritated. Burning sensations can happen during sexual intercourse and during urination.

Oral infections are better known as Thrush. Thrush most commonly occurs in babies but can affect anyone. In babies, it is easy to mistake thrush for milk or formula. The difference is the infections looks like cottage cheese. It is best to not wipe away the spots of thrush because sores could develop and they could bleed. As previously mentioned, thrush symptoms include an off white film inside of the mouth. The yeast film could develop on the gums, the roof of the mouth and the tongue. Another symptom is the tongue can also become swollen, making it difficult to speak, eat or even swallow. Red blisters can also develop inside of the mouth. These blisters will cause much pain and discomfort. There have been cases where thrush has been difficult to diagnose because some of the symptoms can be confused with a canker sore which is also very uncomfortable and painful.

Skin Candida infections is another type of infection that can affect nearly any skin surface on the body. Typically the skin infections will most likely occur in warm, moist, areas like the armpits and the groin. This type of infection can also occur underneath a womans breasts and in skin folds of people that are overweight. Symptoms of a candida infection of the skin include a red, scaling, itchy rash that if left untreated can turn into sores and blisters making them more painful if they crack and bleed. Also, studies have shown that yeast infections of the skin have been linked with elevated blood cholesterol levels.

It may be hard to believe that men can develop a penile yeast infection but it is true. Studies have shown that affects uncircumcised men more often than men that have been circumcised because of the extra skin fold. Men typically get a penis infection from having sex with a woman that has a vaginal infection or from receiving oral sex from a person that has thrush. Symptoms of a male yeast infection will include itching on the penile head and shaft with the penile head turning reddish in color. The penile head may also develop blisters and even emit an off white colored discharge that has a consistency similar to cottage cheese. Men with a candida infection might also experience burning and painful irritation during urinating or sexual intercourse. In some severe cases the penis could bleed as a result of the cracking of the sores and blisters during an erection.

A diaper yeast infection is different from a diaper rash. A baby who is taking an antibiotic or is being breastfed by their mother who is taking an antibiotic can develop an infection. A child that recently had thrush could end up with a diaper yeast infection. That's because the infection can pass through a child's digestive system and end up in his stool, which obviously ends up in his diaper right next to the child's warm, damp skin. The symptoms of a diaper infection and a diaper rash are very similar and can be difficult to diagnose. One difference is there will be raised infected red areas. Another difference is the diaper infection will not react to regular diaper rash treatments.
