Sure, building your list with a squeeze page is one way of building your list. But you need more than that. Just utilizing one method of list building and you will be leaving money on the table. You need to maximize your chances of connecting to your visitors. Forums are great ways to do just that. They are social environments that make people feel welcome and you are the expert because you are running the show. It gives you a level of credibility that isn't automatic in the internet marketing world.

First, you need to set up a forum.

There are several choices and they are all good. Most hosting providers have some type of forum software that can be automatically installed in your hosting account. It might be Simple Machine's Forum or phpBB, or one of several others. Since you are building a professional site, any of these options will work. Keep the options light so the pages will load quickly. All of the major forums are stable and relatively easy to work with. My personal favorite is Simple Machines (SMF) because it is easy for e newbie to learn with and very expandable.

Second, setup categories in your forum.

Of course you want categories in your forum about your main topic, that is a no brainer. But remember, you are trying to get your people to stay on your site longer. The more they get used to seeing your name and site, the more comfortable they will be in buying from you. So, be sure to include some "off topic" conversation areas in your categories. The people who will be chatting on your site will become online friends and they will visit more often when they have some other choices for discussion.

Not too flashy!

Keep your forum theme easy on the eyes. Wild graphics and flashing banner ads make the text difficult to read. Keep the colors soft so your readers eyes won't get tired while reading. Seems like common sense, but I'm sure you have seen sites that you couldn't wait to get off of!

Be sure to send out regular newsletters to your forum list.

Most forum software packages have newsletter features built in. These will allow you to keep in contact with your members regularly and you can also broadcast out emails about special products. And since you had them confirm their subscription to the forum, it isn't spam. They have opted in to your list!

Be sure to include a link to your product or offer in your signature.

Just because it is your forum, don't forget to advertise something of your own! This might be a free forum, but you need to make a living! Your credibility as the forum owner makes your links more attractive.

Forums are easy to setup, don't require much time after launching them, and are great ways to build your credibility. I have built forums inside several sites for various niches and the users really love them. They are social and professional at the same time. Also, the content is user generated and that means that it is lees work for you than a blog to generate content!
