Whether you sell products or service, I'm sure you'll have worked very hard to attract new customers to buy from you. But, once they have bought, what happens next? Do you leave them to enjoy their purchase and turn your attention to finding the next batch of prospects? If so, you could be missing out on some 'easy' sales and making unnecessary work for yourself! Let me explain.
Keep in Touch
If you follow up each purchase with a series of emails and the occasional phone call, this will let them know you care, as well as reinforce that they've made a wise decision in buying from you. If you're comfortable using online methods, you can set up the emails in an autoresponder. Also, an email newsletter is a great way to keep in touch with existing customers and let them know about new products & services they might be interested in.
Surprise them
Send unannounced bonuses. These don't have to be expensive - perhaps a helpful article or checklist relevant to their original purchase. Don't include any promotional messages with these bonuses. Everyone loves receiving unexpected gifts and this is a great way to keep customers coming back for more.
Upsell and Downsell
You'll need to have prepared in advance either an upgrade service / more expensive product for those customers placing an order. And offering a smaller, lower cost item could help you get a sale where there might not have been one at all, and may well persuade the customer to return and buy at a future date.
Invite them to help you
When you're thinking of launching a new product or service, select some of your best clients and ask them to help you by trying it out - preferably free of charge. All you request in return is their feedback and a testimonial, which they'll be happy to give you. It's a nice way to thank clients for their loyalty too.
Feature them
I've seen this done to great effect. Write up a client case study (with permission) and include it in your newsletter and on your blog. This provides a great showcase of your product/expertise as well as being a super promotion for your client.
It's very important to continue to build on your relationship with existing customers, or they may get the impression you were only interested in them for as long as it took to get them to part with their money. I hope these examples have given you some ideas of how to do that in your business.
