5 Ways to Have the Best Family Reunion Ever
1. Delegate. Family reunion time is not the time to be a control freak. Let your
family help with all stages from planning to partying. Put your cousin in charge of food, your uncle in charge of music, your mom in charge of coming up with games for the kids. If you try to do it all yourself, chances are you'll leave out some important details and not have a very good time in the process.
2.Get the kids involved. You can give them responsibilities and have them help you come up with fun activities and games. The more involved you let them be, the more fun they'll have because they will feel a sense of being included, valued, and feel like they really belong in the family. Plus, kids can have some of the best ideas that you or I might never think of. Let their creativity inspire you and have fun getting closer to them in the process.
3. Create context. Just because you're related to a bunch of people by blood doesn't necessarily mean you feel much like a family or have any real sense of how you are all connected. There are lots of remedies for this, including doing some genealogy research on your own or with a professional ahead of time, coming up with some fun games that everyone can do during the reunion to fill in the blanks on the family tree, and creating some kind of movie ahead of time that reveals the family history. The more you can do to create a sense of belonging, shared values, and uncovering what you all have in common beyond blood ties, the greater feeling of union there will be at this and every future family event you plan.
4.Honor your elders and ancestors. Make sure to take some time at the reunion to not only honor the oldest relatives who are present and to give them a chance to connect with and speak to the youngest generations, but also to honor those who have passed. This will also help you to create a stronger family context and to create that sense of connection and belonging we all crave deep down. You don't have to let Grandma Sally talk for two hours, but giving her the space to say a few words about what this family means to her might just bring you all a lot closer together.
5.Document it. While you may not have the budget to hire a professional photographer or videographer to document your reunion, you can still make sure to document it regardless. While a picture as they say is worth a thousand words, if you can get a relative (think teenager/college age kid) to video the reunion as it goes along, this will become a priceless heirloom that generations to come will enjoy. If you want to go beyond the amateur look, make sure to hold the camera steady, linger longer than you think on whatever you're filming, and have a plan. You might want to come up with a shot list for whoever will be filming, so that they know what events, people, and moments are the most important ones that shouldn't be missed by the camera.
