5 Ways to Manage Stress and Get Your Peace Back

Peace. When was the last time you experienced that elusive state of being? Most of us are worried about something all the time. Especially with so many wars going on around the world; terrorist attacks a constant threat; natural disasters like earthquakes in unusual places then tsunamis that kill over 200,000 people!

Our thoughts run like a broken record telling us life is hard and everything is a struggle. As we hold on to troubling thoughts, our adrenal glands release stress hormones that make our muscles tense and our hearts beat faster. Nature designed this fight-or-flight response so our ancestors could escape predators, but today this reaction to everyday stress can harm our immune systems and undermine our well-being. All worry is simply fear. The opposite of fear is faith. Below are five ways to stop worrying and renew your faith in the goodness of life and get your peace back:

Name your worry. Is it a problem at work? An unhealthy relationship? Write it down to bring the worry into focus. Writing it down helps you confront your fear. Fear likes to hide in the shadows. Writing it down brings that fear out of the shadows into the light.

Decide what you can do about it. Seek advice from friends or a counselor, then use your power to change the situation. Write your plan of action down. The power to change is always within your grasp.

Turn fretting into faith. When a worry comes up, say "Cancel that!" Affirm: "I have faith that all things work for my good because God loves me and He's bigger than any fear."

Quiet yourself. Sit quietly and meditate on your favorite bible verse i.e. "Such love has no fear because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of judgment, and this shows that his love has not been perfected in us." (1 John 4:18). or "God is love" (1 John 4:8). Repeat to yourself out loud, "God is love and because He loves me His love is expelling all my fears".

Replace worry with wisdom. At bedtime read a chapter from an uplifting book such as the book of Proverbs in The Bible. This book of the bible was written by King Solomon who was called the wisest man that ever lived. "The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart." (1 Kings 10:24)
