First, it's recommended that you always think twice about choosing a complicated design. Rather than choosing something complex, you should go for a simple design for your new site. A simple and sophisticated layout can help get you first rank on a search engine. Choosing a simple and less complicated design is recommended for older sites as well. Why? Simple website layouts and good keyword reach content can help you to rank well with search engines. Search engines love keyword reach content, but only if they can be readable by search engine spiders easily. In addition, simple designs are tremendously popular in the current web community. Simple designs can look graceful to both search engine spiders and your visitors.

Use HTML:

Use HTML to create your webpage. You simply can not go wrong with HTML or XHTML sites. While the use of other languages such as PHP or ASP may not affect your search engine rankings, they are more complex and require a lot of coding skills. Go for it if you are well versed in such coding languages. If you are not, then start with HTML. Another benefit of using HTML is creating search engine friendly static URLs, which are the cornerstones of your site being indexed by search engine spiders. PHP has its own mod rewrite functionality, but it is time consuming and requires more effort. If you are not in need of a dynamic site, then why choose PHP or ASP?

Use CSS:

Use CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) for designing your site. CSS is easy to learn, search engine friendly, and does not trap search engine crawlers like frames do.

Text Menu/ Text based Navigation:

Text based navigation may not be as appealing as graphic based menus, but text based navigation is very appealing to search engines. Search engine spiders are completely blind to graphics; they do not know what they are, so it will not work. Still, if you insist on using a graphic menu, then be sure to offer a small text based navigation in the footer or bottom area of your site. Don't forget to give alt tags for the graphics used in menus and other areas of your site!
