502 Proxy Error: A Defense to Web Based Threats

This occurs because ISA protects networks from external and internal web-based threats by sending a proxy error message. By sending such message through an upstream server, it acts as a gateway to the user's request of accessing the requested website.

Occurrence of This Problem

This happens not because the upstream or server is down or for that matter there is no response to this error. Rather it is because of an invalid response received from the server showing that it does not agree with the certain format and transmission of data. In other words, the web server is configured to permit certain content group in response to the HTTP data stream sent. Here one machine or both the machines may not be programmed correctly.

To take it as an example, the HTTP message may sometimes contain an unsupported header or an unsupported combination of headers. If the ISA server or the web server begins with a space or tab character in the HTTP header, it will deny all the responses that do not begin with the above content-type header. In "304 not modified" response, it happens that the HTTP header need not have to be detailed in some HTTP response as it does not include any message-body.

In order to protect corporate clients located in networks, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 cause this type of problem. The response from web proxy clients are passed over HTTP since Microsoft ISA Server does not support FTP uploads. This continued until Microsoft Hotfix was applied to the server. It supports for Active or Passive mode in a global ISA server setting.

Fixing the Problem

It is possible that the error may be due to poor IP communication between back-end computers and the Web server at the site. To fix it:

1. You can open a new browser closing the existing one because your browser may either have a script error embedded in any one of the pages or have slow down because of accessing a lot of information at once. All you have to do is to close the browser and wait for some time to enable the computer to stop running any programs. After that, open a new browser.

2. Another method is to restart your computer and the Internet so that the Internet network will automatically fix the problem in the network. Check it again to find out whether the proxy error still exists.

3. Check with your Internet provider to find out whether there is any network outage. It is possible that if there is any network outage, it will show an error. In such cases, you can place the complaint with the company and get it rectified.

4. If the error is thrown in by Microsoft ISA Server 2004, the best method to fix the problem is to download and install the latest service package that contains Hotfix to help fix the 502 proxy error.
