As the 50th anniversary f the MOT dawns, the question is asked to how much it has helped us with road safety over the years. The majority of us see the test as another expensive addition to what is a massive money making affair, including road tax, car insurance and other hidden expenses in owning a car.

In 1960, there were nearly seven thousand deaths on Britain's roads in associating with cars, compared to only two and a half thousand per year today. This is interesting news, as these days there are over thirty four million cars on the roads, compared with a paltry nine million then.

There was very little regulating the cars and drivers, which may have attributed to a large portion of deaths on the road, and cars were often experiencing problems with worn brakes and dodgy steering, only discovered when the driver had an accident. The MOT was launched to calm public outcry at the danger of these vehicles, and it has sat staunchly in place ever since. Every year brakes, lights and steering are checked, and a vehicle is passed for a further year of road use.

160,000 tests are carried out on average each year, and you cannot have your vehicle back on the road unless it does so. The failure rate is around thirty five percent, and ten million vehicles failed last year alone.
