We're going to assume that you start out from the East Coast and head West, since that's where all the adventure is. Beginning from your New York or New Haven car rental, travel to1. Cleveland: There is plenty to see in this city, although it has suffered over the past few decades. The Museum of Art is home to many masterpieces. Chicago: There are few American cities as beautiful as the Second City, so called because it was rebuilt after the great Chicago fire of 1871. There are plenty of things to do, including shows to see, buffets to eat, and people to watch. It's a modern crossroads of the West, and while you're there, you might as well see the Grand Canyon a few hours away. 6. California: This state is the only other place in the world to have Mediterranean weather. The entire 770 miles of coast is a National Monument. Seriously. Then factor in the great American cities of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco and you'll see what the West Coast is all about. The ride on Rt. 1 between Cambria and Monterrey is gorgeous. After you see these sites you can pretty much say you know America. Of course there are many more things to see along the way like all the National Parks, cities, small towns, prairies, plains, mountains, lakes, but this should get you started.
