6 Helpful Home Security Tips for Arkansas Residents

No state is a stranger to crime, especially Arkansas

. Criminals aren't going away anytime soon, so you've got to take measures to thwart them. Don't even think about taking your chances neither; your home will eventually be targeted and that's why you have to implement measures that will give criminals something to think about. Try adhering to the following home security tips and feel confident in the fact that you're doing your best to keep criminals at bay.

1. If criminals don't see anything of value to take, they probably wouldn't feel the need to break into your house in the first place. For this reason, appearances are important. It's okay to be proud of the things you have, but at the same time it pays to be modest, at least from a home security perspective. That means putting away all of your belongings in nondescript containers and covering your windows so that no one gets a chance to scope out what you've got inside.

2. Put a guard dog in your backyard. That's the easy way of putting it. The longer answer involves getting the right dog when it's young and training it to behave and listen to your commands; an unruly dog can end up doing more harm than good. Once it has gone through some obedience training, then it can be an excellent home security addition.

3. Put motion-activated flood lights around your home. This is especially helpful for your front yard. Criminals don't want to be discovered while they're trying to commit their crimes. That's why they often use cover of darkness at night time to their advantage. Take that away from them by putting up lights that will only turn on when movement is detected. There are different quality setups available with varying degrees of effectiveness but the best ones involve both infrared and motion sensors.

4. If you haven't changed your locks in a while, it could be time to. Locks can get worn down over time, making them less effective and more prone to manipulation. Additionally, keys can end up changing hands many times over the years. Eventually, they could end up in the wrong hands. Don't make it so easy for criminals. Installing new locks is easy, affordable, and effective.

5. To increase your home security, try gardening. Criminals may think twice about climbing through a window if it has rose bushes around it. They'd be too lazy to prune them, so they'd probably end up thinking that going in through a window would be too much of a hassle.

6. Have a home alarm system installed at your residence. Such a system will take worry completely out of the security equation. Your alarm company will monitor the array of sensors that they'll install throughout your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whenever any one of them is tripped, they will dispatch local police to your house immediately. Criminals already know that they don't have a chance against such a system, and that's why they'll probably skip over your home once they notice that alarm company sign posted in your front yard.
