6 Simple And Doable Tips That Can Prolong Washing Machine Life
If I have to vote one appliance that I can consider indispensable at home
, I will vote for washing machine in a heartbeat. But that is because I positively loathe doing laundry. The washer is definitely a huge help at home.
I am not the only one who will panic and pull hairs out in frustration over a broken washing machine. If this happens to you, I am sure you will also fret about it. This is why it is important to prevent breakages from happening.
Maintenance should be done constantly. Here are some simple tips that can maintain and prolong the life of your laundry appliance:
1. If your washer is prone to molds and mildew, you should run an empty water cycle after doing your laundry. Add a cup of distilled white vinegar. Let the machine churn the vinegar. It helps get rid of detergent residues and prevents the accumulation of hardened molds or mineral deposits in the pipes. Allow it to drain completely. You can run another quick washing cycle if you want to flush out remaining vinegar residues.
2. Winterize your washer. This will prevent the pipes or the hose from freezing solid. Make sure you do this right before taking a long winter vacation.
3. Do not overwork your machine. Maximize the space inside the drum but do not fill it up to the brim Otherwise, the machine will have trouble tumbling your clothes. Before doing your laundry, separate your clothes in batches.
If your washer has spin settings, try adjusting it to medium spin speed only. Fast spin cycle might overwork the motor of the machine and might cause faster deterioration of the belt of the machine. Also clean the filter of the washer hose. This can cause high water pressure that might damage the rubber seal of the hose and might cause leaking.
4. Avoid using hot water cycle. Instead of hot water, use cold or warm water settings only. Hot water increases energy consumption and shortens the life of your washer.
5. If you have a high-efficiency laundry machine, use HE laundry detergents. These machines usually have better friction inside. They dissolve soaps faster than regular washers. If you use regular detergent, soap bubbles and suds might accumulate inside, thereby resulting to malfunctions. Only use a small amount of HE detergent. This is already enough in cleaning dirty laundry.
6. Change the hose after 2 years. This will prevent hidden leaking. You might want to change hoses before traveling. There are many cases where the washer hose rubber seal got busted and the washer leaked when the homeowners are still on vacation.
With these simple tips, you can have a more durable washing machine. It is better to avoid washer problems before they start emerging.
