6 Sleep Positions, What's Right For You?

Many studies have shown that many US adults are not getting quality

, consistent rest. Lack of sleep, and even restless sleep have been conected to a number of heart and health issues. The National Sleep Foundation that up to two thirds of adults in the US suffer from mild to extreme insomnia several nights out of the week. Only a third regularly sleep five hours or less and full 18 % claim that they never get a good night's sleep. A good night's rest may well be as simple as changing the position in which you sleep.

In this article we will outline five of the most common sleeping positions:

1) Fetal

2) The Log

3) Yearner

4) The Soldier

5) Free Faller

6) The Starfish

1. The Fetus

This position looks like a fetus pose, lying on your side with your legs bent and your arms are out slightly. This is considered a very healthy position, not only does it allow oxygen to flow freely through the body's passages, but it also reduces the risk of acid stomach reflux

2. The Log

In this position the body is on it's side with the arms straight downAnother good position which allows unobstructed breathing. However, if you sleep in this position it's important that both your mattress and pillow are supportive and firm

3. The Yearner

Again this position refers to sleeping on the side, but this time the arms are reaching out. Also an excellent position to sleep in, as it helps to support the back discs, and back muscles.

4. The Soldier

In this position you have your arms at your side and lie flat on your backFor a good night's sleep, this position is not the best This position encourages snoring, as your tongue has a tendency to fall to the back of your mouth

5. The Free-Faller

"Free-Faller" referrs to your body on its front with your head turned and arms on the pillow.Another one to avoid. This "Free-Faller" position has the potential to cause a lot of problems. When your neck is laying at a 90 angle this can cause stiffness, and even headaches. Also, sleeping with hands close to the face can cause the nerves in your neck to become compressed leaving you with a stiff neck. If you sleep in this position, make sure your mattress is good and firm as a softer mattress could put strain on your spine.

3. The Starfish

Quite the opposite of the "Free-Faller", you are sleeping on your back, with your arms and legs spread out

Although this position may lead to snoring, this is actually one of the healthiest ways to sleep on your back.

If this position is creating sleeping problems with your partner, or if you or your sleeping companion snores, simply bring up the idea of different rooms or separate beds. Although somewhat taboo, this idea is perfectly ok if it means that both of you are getting the sleep you need
