6 Things That You Need to Know When You Are Buying a New Computer

I know that a lot of you are thinking of buying a new computer for yourself

. I don't blame you; we are bombarded daily by commercials that offer us computers for a fraction of the price of what we were used to 2-3 years ago, but do you really know what you are getting, or you just lost in translation? This article will explain the 6 basic and vital things you have to know about computers. After all, you must know what you want and what is offered to you.

Processors (CPUs)

You must choose, are you an Intel person or an AMD kind of person? If you are a real computer buff you will disagree with a lot of the things that you will read. This article is for the ordinary simple user. AMD and INTEL make almost all PC CPUs, none is better than the other for a normal user, check your budget and then see what CPU you want and need. Intel core duo or AMD Turion X2 dual core both over 2.2GHz is fine, that's the end of the CPUs.

Memory (RAM)

Almost all PCs use the DDR2 memory, a normal PC should have at least 2GB of memory, 3 gigs or 4 gigs will be preferable. These RAM things give a PC its speed, a PC for normal home use will be really quick with 4GB of memory.

Hard Drives

I love people that come to me and say, my PC has 1TB (terabyte) hard drive or 2 hard drives. I will say it again; it depends on how much space you need. OK granted 500GB is ok, but make sure its running at 7200rpm and above. After a while if you see that its not enough buy an external one which is connected with USB.

Optical Drives (CD/DVD/Blu-ray)

You want to burn CDs, DVDs and stuff, ok fair enough. Even the low end models have this, if you want to burn blue-rays or light scribe on the disc then you have to pay more. As above, you can buy an external optical drive for not a lot of money, you choose.

Video Cards

Don't stay with the integrated graphics, in 8 months time you will regret it. Splash some cash and get a graphics card, if you don't play games that need lots of graphics, a card of 512MB memory will suit you nice.

External Connectors

99% of new PCs have USB 2.0 and build in media card readers. If you need more than 4 USB ports buy a USB hub and if the pc hasn't got media card reader buy one and solve this problem once and for all.

It all starts and finishes with 1 question. What are my real needs? Even if you have cash to spare, why through them away on something you will not use?

Buy a PC that fulfills your needs plus a little bit, not a PC that fulfills your needs plus the needs of the whole neighbourhood.
