6 Tips To Help Reduce The Weight Of Your Overweight Child
It is a worrying fact that children are getting fatter
. Some estimates state that for every three children one is either obese or overweight and this number has doubled compared to 10 years ago.
There are many factors to why kids are getting fatter. The wider available of processed fast food and a lack of exercise are two of the most prevalent causes. As well as your childs health being in danger, being overweight can also affect their confidence and self esteem.
The parents role is essential to ensure the weight of their child does not get out of control. The following are helpful guidelines to help control your childs weight.
1) Dependence on food can be an emotional problem that is linked to a low self esteem. As a parent encourage your child to be more positive about their self worth. When appropriate make positive comments and feedback about their appearance and an achievement they have made.
2) Because they are so young it is not a wise decision to put your child on a diet. There body is growing and it needs nutrients that a diet could restrict or omit. If you are deciding to reduce the number of calories in your childs diet then seek the advice of either a doctor or dietician. A better way is to look at childs current diet and identify those foods that can be replaced with healthier alternatives.
3) Children are very good at mimicking the actions of adults. As a parent you are a role model. If you enjoy stuffing your face with creamy buns and chips on a regular basis then, your children will likely form the same eating habits. Therefore, set a good example by eating healthy food together.
4) It is better to explain to your child that eating too much is not good for them rather than banning it. When you take something away kids tend to want it more. If they continue to eat too much then restrict it to a healthier level.
5) Children love snacks and this is a good opportunity to introduce healthier options. Restrict the use of sugary biscuits, potato crisps and candy bars. Put plenty of fresh fruit around the house as this will help them to acquire the habit of eating healthier food.
6) As well as a healthy diet children need to keep active. This means getting them outdoors into the fresh air. Activities can be family affairs such as walks in the country. Encourage them to join social clubs as this will help them to lose weight and build their self confidence by making new friends.
If your child has a health condition then seek the advice of a doctor before changing their diet or exercise routine.
