Make sure and use broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen. It should hopefully protect from both UVA and UVB rays, and have an SPF of 30 or higher. Water resistance is important, due to exposure to perspiration and water.

Use A LOT of sunscreen, because you typically need a tablespoon or more for your face. Some dermatologists recommend up to 1 ounce shot glass or more for your entire body. That is a lot of sunscreen, and I'm not certain that the average person uses that much sunscreen for an outing in the sun.

Try to wear protective clothing and a hat, since this also reduces sun damage. There are types of clothing that has SPF built into the fabric, and also, some dyes that you can use in the washing machine that give SPF protection to your clothing.

Try to stay out of the sun anyway by using an umbrella, shade, or other sheltered area.
