Slowdown on Junk Food
We all know junk food is bad for one's health. They are high in salt and saturated fat which has links to many diseases and ill health. How does it affect my brain? You may ask. Well the saturated fats and salts are one of the main causes of carotid artery disease. If carotid arteries (which supply oxygenated blood to the front part of your brain) start getting clogged up and restrict the flow of oxygenated blood to the brain it could effect speech and higher thinking. Which is what the front part of the brain controls. Not only do you run the risk of carotid artery disease you will also be stunting your brains ability to think! Not something you want to be doing if your looking to enhance you memory and brain power.
Drink less or Avoid Alcohol
Some studies have shown that drinking moderately one to 2 glasses of wine a day can actually improve your memory. The small amount can relax the body and allows us to absorb memories easier. Some people find the above statement quite controversial. But the way I see it if we do things in balance and moderation your on the right track. For some people that 1 glass of wine ignites a pleasure sense that helps our brains to become active. Although larger consumed quantities of alcohol actually kills brain cells and can lead to severe cases of memory loss. The key here is to be balanced. Some of us know very well what a bad hangover feels like. Not only is your memory patchy, you'd rather forget some of the things you did any way!!!
Drink more Water!
You should be drinking at least 2 l of water a day. Try to always keep a water bottle on you at all times. Smaller 16 oz or 500 ml bottles are easy to keep in your bag or even the jacket pocket. Drinking water consistently throughout the day is best for optimal brain functioning. Carbonated and sugary drinks should be avoided at all costs. Carbonated drinks with sugar do give your body a short term boost but what goes up fast must come down fast. They will leave you feeling tired and searching for the next sugar boost. I know it's hard to avoid the sugar drinks all the time, but at least make an effort to supplement more water in your drinking behaviour. It'll give you long term energy to help your brain function throughout the day, not just in short power bursts.
Eat Breakfast
Eating a healthy breakfast of fruits and grains will supply your body with the necessary energy and nutrients to get your brain buzzing from the start. Many cultures skip breakfast with a coffee and light pastry substitute. The pastries are stuffed with loads of sugar and the coffee's got a high dose of caffeine. Both of these will send you energy levels right up and drop you down as fast as you went up. They will leave you feeling dehydrated and with less energy than you started with. Remember our brains function far better in a hydrated state.
Power snack
If you energy levels are feeling low. Try having a power snack. Having a fresh smoothly or a piece of fruit or even better have one of the brain foods. Try eating low glycemic index foods so that you can maintain your energy levels for longer periods of time. Remember the day is a marathon not a short race!
Try keep things balanced. Remember healthy people have healthy habits!
