7 Money Saving Plumbing Tips
We're all trying to find methods to save money
. Particularly in the current economy, money, for many of us, is tight.
Noted below are seven tips which will save you cash on your house repair bills.
1. Prevention: Prevent problems from appearing in the first place or from getting worse because of neglect. Some of the most common problems that a plumber gets called out to are as follows:
Dripping taps Blocked drains Problems with the hot water system
Many little problems can be prevented from turning into big problems by simple measures. For example, a dripping tap left unchecked will get worse and further damaged may be caused due to over tightening. This means the replacing the tap and that is, most likely, going to be expensive. When you notice a tap dripping, act immediately by replacing the washer or cartridge yourself. It is an easy job that should only take you 20 minutes.
Check that your plug holes and waste outlets are clear of hair and solidified soap also check the "U" bends or traps under your sinks for potential blockages. On occasion pour boiling water down your sinks and shower wastes not forgetting the washer trap. Look outside too for any weeds or leaves that could be obstructing gutters, gully's and waste outlets.
2. Buy any parts yourself: Buying the parts yourself for any major works in your kitchen or bathroom could save you money. Most plumbers will be happy to work for labor charge only and will supply you a list of the materials needed for the job.
3. Utilise a qualified plumber : Employing a qualified credible plumber could save your money in the long as you will have to get one should you employ a "cowboy" to mend a bungled job. Get 1 or 2 quotes and ask for hourly rate charges. You might be able to get suggestions from chums.
4. Save your plumber valuable plumbing time : You do not need to be paying your plumber to clear the area before they start work especially if you're paying an hourly rate. Empty cupboards and confirm there is little that can cost the plumber time and you cash getting access to the job.
5. Employ your plumber's time : Your plumber may charge a minimum call out time of, for instance, half an hour. If he finishes the job in ten mins, he might as wel fix that dripping tap in his remaining twenty mins.
6. Don't fall into the trap of the planning office : If you're undertaking major works ensure you clear it with your planning dept as authorization could be needed and you might land yourself with a fine should you go ahead without authorization.
7. Get quotes: It will pay to get three written quotes particularly for major works. Carefully compare each quote as to what is included, so don't immediately accept the cheapest. If possible ask your plumbers for references from previous and recent jobs and follow them up.
