, all in just one little fruit called the Acai berry. You've heard of it of course otherwise you've been dead or living under a rock for quite a few years now.

Aggressive marketing campaigns praise it to be the end all and be all of supplements with amazing properties. They drop fancy words like "Anthocyanins" and "Proanthocyanidins" on the unsuspecting longevity hungry public like cluster bombs. They even dragged the now famous Dr. Oz and our favorite show host Oprah into the fray, claiming they recommended the products.

Let's look at just seven of these "secrets".

1. Increased energy levels. Well, what's so wonderful about that? I can get increased energy levels from a can of soda, from blueberries and various other sources.

2. Improved sexual performance. Oh! That's a good one but then again you'll most probably have to drink or eat a ton of it to see the effects in that department. Some marketers even claimed an increase in the size of the penis! How unscrupulous can you get.

3. Improved skin appearance. Okay, this one is very vague and people tell about the antioxidant effects of washing free radicals from the skin cells and so forth into the realm of intergalactic travel. Let's just say that the inner workings and effects of antioxidants on free radicals has never been proven

4. Improved heart health. Hmm... Wonder whose thumb they sucked that from. Anyway there is a whole plethora of foodstuff that can have a positive effect on heart health.

5. Cancer curing properties. Since a university released some inconclusive studies where Acai extract was used to cause Leukemia cells to self destruct, it was seen as the new hope in cancer research. They however also said that other fruits like Mangoes and Grapes had the same properties. They also claimed that the berry was one of the richest sources of antioxidants but failed to mention that it came a bad second to many other fruits such as grapes, blueberries and even oranges and apple juice to name only a few. All this only means that it may have good properties in the prevention of cancer, as have many other fruits, but not in curing it.

6. Weight loss. This claim is equally vague as most people who lost weight while using some Acai product were also on some diet and exercise program. So tell me how you can claim that it was any one of those factors alone that made you lose weight.

7. Reversal of Diabetes. Now this is a rich one. In other words, diabetes is now a thing of the past! Boy, speak of smoking your socks.

You just have to wonder why after eating these berries for ages, in fact it made up 42% of their diet, these ancient Brazilian Caboclo people from the Amazon still died from the diseases that civilized westerners brought into their midst. Is antioxidants not supposed to prevent "stuff" like that from happening?

In conclusion, please keep your wallets and your credit cards in your pockets and don't fall for all the hype because there are many scams afoot where people are bamboozled into giving their credit card information and then can't stop these shysters from deducting funds repeatedly. A lot has to be proven before something can actually be accepted as scientific fact and reality.
