7 Things You Absolutely Must Bring On Any Vacation

Many of travel how-to articles these days seem to be focusing on what not to bring

on vacation - how to unload your luggage, pare down and save on baggage fees. And while that's a good idea, there are certain things that you really just can't live without while you're traveling. So, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater - make sure you bring these seven essentials along for the ride.

Good shoes. I usually bring one to two pairs of shoes and one pair of flip flops on any holiday, whether it is a weekend city break or a month of backpacking. 1 pair of comfortable, long lasting walking shoes, one pair of dress-em-ups. The flip flops are useful for hostel showering or just hanging out on the beach.

Plenty of underwear. I'm sorry, I am just not into buying undies on the road. It can be hard to find brands, materials and sizes in other places, too. So, enough underwear to last about 5 days is plenty for me - I can wash along the way on longer trips.

Chapstick. Okay, every person has that one toiletry or grooming item that they can't live without, and for me, it's chapstick. I am very picky about this particular item, and if you have an item that you are picky about, bring it along.

iPod. This item is invaluable to me on any journey. I use it for entertainment on the flight, to drown out the sound of crying toddlers in the airport, to lull myself to sleep in noisy hostels and to perk up my solo walks through unfamiliar cities. They are also handy for photo storage.

Bottle opener. I don't even want to count the number of bottle openers that I've bought and thrown out on trips over the years, so now I just carry one. If you will be staying in hotels,, you might want to have a few beers in the evening, or you might find yourself on a Chinese train with an unopenable bottle of wine.

Day bag. I travel with my big rucksack quite a bit, but even when I am traveling with a small suitcase, I always like to have a day bag with me. It can be a purse, a mini-backpack, messenger bag or any other type of small, convenient bag to help you carry around incidentals while you happen to be sightseeing.

Paper and pen. This is almost certainly the simplest one to overlook. Most people don't think of a pad and paper as something to bring along on vacation, but it is actually probably the most useful item on this list. You never know when you're going to have to jot down a flight number or the address of a hotel, or have to ask for directions in a foreign language. So have a pen and paper always with you.
