7 Things Your Internet Marketing Company Won't Tell You
For the past 3-4 years, many small businesses got burnt by more than a few Internet marketing companies I have worked with on Joomla related projects. While you can learn a lot from what quality Internet marketing companies tell you, sometimes you can learn a lot more from what they will NOT say:
All our work can be found free of charge on the Internet. If you are able to run your own business, create a business plan and know how to use a search engine, you can prepare a good Internet marketing plan yourself based on white papers, Internet marketing samples, articles, blogs, etc. This is primarily a result of Internet marketing agencies themselves releasing huge amounts of great information which leads to their own struggles.
We have a high cost per new client so we'll have to supercharge you when you become our client to break even and make money. Considering that most of their time is spent trying to attract rich clients, writing content and researching what others are doing, they will have to charge you very much for work they perform on your own site even when it comes to simple tasks such as installing Google Analytics or setting up website goals.
Following your directions is much easier than providing consultative selling advice. In my experience, Internet marketing agencies do learn very well what the client's goals and objectives are but they often fail at providing the best Internet strategy and options. Instead of providing options A or B based on your input and their best knowledge and experience, they will just implement exactly what you have requested. I think this is a result of a) not knowing what the best recommendations are and b) feeling that they are not being compensated enough for making quality recommendations and options.
Cost of nothing is often better than doing business with us. A primary reason for this is that Internet marketing companies try to provide costly services where they could easily train your internal staff member to do for a much lower cost. By providing your staff ability to understand statistics, analyze keywords and complete competitive research using their premade templates and reports, Internet Marketing consultants would have more time to focus on delivering web strategy elements that give you an edge over your competition. Instead, I often see underutilized Joomla sites with flat traffic, no goals measurements or improvements because the cost of nothing is lower than getting Internet marketing help.
I, as an Internet marketing account manager, will be the weakest link of the entire operation. Internet marketing companies typically have 1-2 very smart and experienced consultants and then hire business college graduates (call them account managers) with no or very little experience. These account managers often lead to slow down and break down in communication where everything has to pass through them. The success of your project could very much depend on how smart and interested they are in your website.
I am not your web design company. Internet marketing companies typically outsource their design work to other companies and freelancers meaning that you're likely to be paying more for work that they do not perform. As a result of broken communication with the development team and choosing among the cheapest developers and development companies, you're likely to start battling technical issues instead of concentrating on your Internet marketing efforts.
Your site is more likely to be hacked. Internet marketing agencies are the least proactive on security and disaster recovery aspects of Joomla sites. They just don't make this important because their solution to all issues is primarily more marketing. This leads to more companies using cheap shared hosting, relaxed security policies, etc and if your Joomla site does get hacked, it will take for them much longer to respond to your emergency.
