Staying healthy during a change of seasons can be a challenge
. It's important to remember that as we watch the world around us changing, our bodies are changing too. It's a time of stress. Many of our patients at the wellness centercome down with a cold or flu during this time. But what can you do to avoid being a sickness statistic?
1. Eat foods that support health. Two words: fruit and vegetables...with the accent on vegetables. Avoid processed foods which lack vital nutrients.
2. Regular exercise. In case you're wondering, regular doesn't mean once a year. Shoot for five days of exercise and at least get three. If you're out of shape, start walking. Work up to 30 minutes where you're huffing and puffing but can still carry on a conversation
3. Get some sun. Vitamin D is made when our skin comes in contact with sunlight. That's a problem because this vitamin is vital to the immune system. Using sun block interferes with that process. 20 minutes of sunlight can produce quite a bit of Vitamin D. If you remain unconvinced, take a Vitamin D3 supplement.
4. Chiropractic. A chiropractor can improve the function of the spine which allows the nervous system to work at its best.
5. Omega 3 - Fish oil. This is a must. Since the majority of our food is processed, our diets have too many Omega 6 oils and very little Omega 3's. Omega 3 comes from flax and cold water fish. Taking an Omega 3 supplements will support the heart, brain and immune system.
6. Detox your liver and colon. The liver has to deal with all of the toxins we encounter daily. That includes pollution, medication and other toxins. Our colons have to processed all the food. Both of these organs affect the immune system. Start with a fruits and vegetable and plenty of water. There are many supplements to stimulate organs to expel toxins.
7. The importance of sleep. Too many people staying up late and get up early. Cutting back on sleep is an invitation to weaken the immune system. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation reduces the produce of T-Cells. So stop watching late night TV and get a good night's sleep.
