7 Tips on web design

1. Domain Name

1. Domain Name

Is your domain name relevant to what you are doing? Most people name their website to their company. This is interesting and helps in awareness creation for your company. However, company names mostly do not relate closely to what their business is about. Hence, naming your website to the services and products that the company is doing might be a better strategy. Ie. http://www.ebizwebdesign.com.sg

2. Web Hosting

In current society, most domain name registrars is tied up with web hosting. However, they are still separate entities. It is important that a company or individual has controls over the domain name management. In the event whereby the hosting company folds or becomes nasty, the company can change a hosting provider easily by just changing their nameservers.

3. Color Scheme and consistency

The web is becoming more robust by the moment. With trillions of website around, some companies would like to make their site attractive by making it radical. However, as the website is seen from a bright LCD or LED monitor, it might be better to use more comfortable color schemes to reduce glare and discomfort in reading (ie. White words on black background). Colors used for the generic layout should be limited to 3 so as to avoid complexity. Consistency in design and theme for the web pages needs to be observed so that the user will not get confused when they navigate from one point to another.

4. Cross-Browser Checks

Just when you think your design looks great, and works great in IE, it just may not be working in other browsers. It's important that your website works across browsers. It doesn't have to be perfect, but the basic necessities should work, and the user shouldn't see any problems. The most popular browsers to check are Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8, Firefox 3, Safari 3, Chrome, Opera and the iPhone.

5. Analytics

Installing some sort of analytical tool is important for measuring statistics to see how your website performs. Track daily unique hits, monthly page views and browser statistics, all useful data to start tracking from day 1. Why spend hundreds or thousands and not able to have any metrics to track its performance?

6. Favicon

A favicon brands the tab or window in which your website is open in the user's browser. It is also saved with the bookmark so that users can easily identify pages from your website. Some browsers pick up the favicon if you save it in your root directory as favicon.ico, but to be sure it's picked up all the time.

7. Sitemap

Adding a sitemap.xml file to your root directory allows the major search engines to easily index your website. The file points crawlers to all the pages on your website. XML-Sitemaps automatically creates a sitemap.xml file for you. After creating the file, upload it to your root directory so that its location is www.mydomain.com/sitemap.xml.
