Mention the word Waterloo to someone and the Battle immediately springs to mind. OK, so that's probably the most famous Waterloo in the world but it's also the name of a key area in London.

Ever wondered what goes on in the area apart from the huge train station? Well you're in luck! Here's your quick guide to Waterloo!

1. Waterloo lies in the London borough of Lambeth and falls under the London postcode of SE1. Broadly speaking it's found just below South Bank and between Borough and Lambeth.

2. The area of is mainly centred around Waterloo Station which serves millions of busy London commuters every day. The station was formally the home of the Eurostar but lost its title when it moved to King's Cross back in 1997.

3. In addition to Waterloo Station, the area is also served by Waterloo East Station and is home to the Underground stations of Waterloo, Lambeth North and Southwark.

4. In the past, the area was known as a marshy area which was famous for pretty cottages and entertainment like circuses and pretty gardens. The marsh was drained in 1817 after Waterloo Bridge was opened and the land was developed into shops and houses.

5. The Cut at Waterloo is home to a number of prestigious performing arts venues , such as the Old Vic and the Young Vic. The Old Vic tends to feature BAFTA-type performances, while its younger sister tends to host more controversial performances.

6. Waterloo is famous for its BFI IMAX which opened in 1999. This huge 477 seat dome has become a local landmark for the area and shows feature films and special one-off documentaries.
