8 Tips On Appliance Safety
Every home has a multitude of appliances, ranging from kitchen apparatus to others like televisions
, washing machines, and clothes dryers. It is a known fact that electrical devices, if not handled with precaution can lead to hazards, and it is thus extremely important, especially in houses with small children to follow all safety norms that there are, whilst using anything that requires electrical input.
Offices and schools too must take special measures to ensure safety when using electrical gadgets and appliances. Failure to do so can cause fires or result in electrocution, damaging a lot more than one can imagine.
This article lists down simple things to keep in mind when using an electric piece of equipment. Even if it is something as small as a hair dryer, it brings with it the hazard of catching fire if not handled with care.
Check for Safety Marks before Purchasing While purchasing electric products, check to see that they have a safety mark, or that the manufacturing company has obtained a safety certificate from the relevant regulating body or an authorized customer laboratory.
Keep them Dry- Keep appliances away from wet areas, especially in the kitchen, bathroom, basement, and garage.
Dont Meddle- If your air conditioner or refrigerator is giving you trouble, it is probably because the condenser needs to be serviced. Do not open up the unit and try to meddle, you are risking electrocution. Simply contact a company that offers condenser repair solutions and have them come and fix it. Alternatively, if the unit is under warranty, contact the customer service of the brand and have them come over and look at it.
Ensure Grounding- The idea behind grounding is to protect the people who use metal-encased appliances from electric shock. The appliance is connected with a three pronged plug directly to the ground thus ensuring safety. If you stick an appliance with a two pronged plug into a three prong plug socket, it will still work but the extra prong is what will give you the grounding and the safety.
Act on the Signs . If your power goes out a lot or the lights in your home flicker, smell bad, or make noise, make note of these signs and act on them. Have an electrician come to inspect your wiring; do not wait until there is an electrical burst or short circuit. Immediately fix appliances or lamps that sputter or spark.
Keep Devices Clean and Wires Covered Keep your appliances clean, especially ovens; clean them of any flammable particles and debris. Also ensure all wires are covered. Open or broken wires are risky, get them replaced immediately.
Always Switch off Completely- Put off all appliances from the main switch. Stop the flow of electricity completely to avoid mishaps like shocks.
Keep Children Away- Electrical appliances are not playthings. Explain this to your children and educate them on possible hazards. Supervise them when they are using anything electrical.
Safety rules when followed will do no harm but if ignored could lead to avoidable danger.
