8 Tips That Will Help You Move Up The Corporate Ladder


A sure way to climb the corporate ladder within any organization requires a specific predefined and documented strategy. It is "Who you know, Not What you know" that will get you higher in the executive chain. Building the appropriate strategy for rising within a corporation requires an organized, clear picture of the lines of power that exist within your workplace.

Executing the following 8 tips will help you to climb ranks within your workplace quicker than others.

Create a document to record all the necessary organizational hierarchy information and follow these instructions. Use any method to document the data (Spreadsheet, presentation software, paper, etc.,) When done, you'll have a directory of up to 40 people with contact information at your disposal. If you work for a larger company, select the people you'll include based on your department staff roster. Include everyone with whom you'll likely interact on the job. (A company phone list is a great tool for this purpose.)


Start with the highest-ranking people. Write their names in a row across the top of the page. Beneath the top-ranked people, write the names of the people who report to them, and continue down the chart past your level so that there is enough room for one or two ranks of names beneath you. When you finish with this step, you should have a chart of the company/department reporting structure.

Draw a circle around the name of each individual listed on the chart. This circle will be used to document comments about the person, his/her relationship to other people in the chart, and his/her relationship with you.

Your next step is to write one or two of your impressions and comments in each of the circles about each person. Be sure to include information about the type of relationship you have with each one, interests you share, and potential areas of conflict.

Indicate all reporting relationships by drawing lines between the circles using a blue pen (or blue line color) . Using a red pen (or red line color), draw lines to indicate any personal or strong political alliances you have perceived between people, which may or may not coincide with reporting lines. On each line, write one or two facts about the reporting relationship. Examples: Jake reports to Mark, but only on budget; Susan is too completely dependent on Betty, and can';t make a decision without consulting her.

Now that you understand the power structure, write down a goal about where you want to be within the organization. Make it a S.M.A.R.T Goal - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound (It may be necessary to achieve milestones before you achieve your goal. For example, if you need to influence a person at the top, you may have to establish relationships with lower ranked people that will help you get closer to the people at the top. Using the power structure information gathered, imagine what you would need to do to get noticed and by whom. Then write down the different things you can do to get noticed and focus these actions towards the person you want to influence. Review you goals, actions, and strategy regularly so that you can adapt accordingly. Track the progress of your goals and as you gain power within the organization. Be flexible to adapt new influence tactics focused on people that are higher up in the corporate chain. Always make sure that your action plan is written down and revised periodically.

Don't leave this roadmap lying around because it is a valuable political tool. It allows you to visualize instantly all the relationships and cross relationships that exist in your workplace, putting you at an instant advantage over people who try to carry around all this information in their head. It gives you a view of the areas where you can exert influence on people . . often without talking to them directly. It can even help you chart a path to your next promotion or analyze power factions within your support staff.


Don't fail to update your roadmap every every week. When you're dealing with a large number of individuals, you'll be surprised how frequently new situations evolve.

You'll be amazed at the power edge this approach will give you. In a very short time you will achieve what most employees achieve after working for a company for many years.
