And yet to me one of the most beautiful and resourceful creations of relatively modern man has been the humble fender seat. No other product made of human hands quite measures up in terms of craftsmanship, purpose and sheer practicality.

The fender seat, or club fender as it sometimes called, was originally used in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century in clubs in and around London, as well as in the billiard rooms and libraries of substantial country houses.

Their continuing value as a logical piece of furniture, aside from their ornate attractiveness, has meant that an industry supporting the manufacture and indeed the restoration of fender seats survives and indeed prospers today. Almost invariably this work is performed by hand, using hand tools, allowing a dedicated, bespoke service to be offered to clients.
